Explainer video vs. product demo: which one does your SaaS need?

Explainer videos sell the idea. Product demos show the product. Here is how to tell which one your SaaS needs first, and when you need both.

Founders often ask for "a video" before deciding what the video is supposed to do. The two most common formats for a SaaS product, the explainer and the product demo, look similar from a distance and do completely different jobs. Picking the wrong one is the most expensive mistake you can make before a single frame is animated.

The short version

  • An explainer video sells the idea. It answers "what is this and why should I care?" for someone who has never heard of you.
  • A product demo shows the product. It answers "how does it actually work?" for someone who is already interested.

If a visitor cannot yet describe your product in one sentence, they need an explainer. If they can, and they are trying to work out whether it fits their workflow, they need a demo.

What an explainer video does

An explainer is built on a script. It opens on a problem the viewer recognises, introduces the product as the way out, and closes on a single clear promise. The interface may appear, but it is there to support the story rather than to be studied.

This is the right tool when the product is new to its category, when the value is abstract, or when the audience is not technical. Our explainer for Basic Memory is a good example: "a shared markdown memory bank for AI tools" is hard to grasp as a feature list, but easy to feel as a story about never having to repeat yourself to an AI again.

What a product demo does

A demo is built on a journey. It follows one user through one workflow, and the interface is the star. Good demos are not screen recordings: the UI is rebuilt in motion so each click and result is legible, the pacing is controlled, and nothing irrelevant is on screen.

This is the right tool when the viewer already understands the category and wants proof. In our demo for OBPrint, the whole video follows a single print order from request to output, because the buyer's real question was "how much friction does this remove?"

How to choose

Ask where the video will live and what the viewer knows when they press play.

  • Homepage hero, ads, cold outreach: the viewer knows nothing. Start with an explainer.
  • Feature pages, sales follow-ups, onboarding: the viewer is already interested. Start with a demo.
  • Launch day: you need attention before either. A short launch film does that job.

When you need both

Most products eventually need both, because a funnel has more than one stage. The practical question is order. If people land on your site and leave confused, fix understanding first with an explainer. If people understand the product but stall before signing up or booking a call, a demo will do more for you.
